singapore ranks first in asia-pacific’s best cities report

In the inaugural Asia Pacific’s Best Cities report published by Resonance Consultancy, Singapore has taken the top spot on the list. Drawing on insights from over 7000 respondents, the list ranks the overall performance of more than 140 cities in the region based on three key factors – Livability, Lovability and Prosperity.

Our 2024 relocation trends at Cartus show that Singapore is a top five destination within Asia Pacific, perfectly aligning with the report’s findings. So, what are some factors that entice businesses and their talents to our vibrant city-state?

strategic geographical location

Singapore’s strategic location is an innate factor that continually contributes to the city-state’s success in the region.

Situated at the Southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, it is often coined as the gateway into Southeast Asia, which is set to be the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2030. Beyond that, it is also a common entry point for regional expansion within ASEAN and extending to the Greater China region.

Singapore is also home to the world’s second-busiest container port, with a record high of over 40 million shipping containers in 2024. Singapore also has an extensive network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that facilitates efficient trade between key markets in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

strong economic outlook and pro-business environment

Singapore’s economy is highly developed and consistently ranked as the most open globally. Pro-business and low tax policies attract businesses and foreign investments. With the second highest per capita GDP and over USD $501 billion GDP in 2023, Singapore excels in economic performance.

Known for its comprehensive legal and regulatory standards, it remains the least corrupt nation in APAC and third globally. Singapore is the world’s fourth-largest financial center and a major technology hub in Southeast Asia, with significant investments from Google, TikTok, and Amazon, just to name a few. The high concentration of multinational corporations creates a dynamic and competitive job market, attracting top talent from around the world.

Moreover, Singapore’s strategic policies and funding have made it a magnet for global talent. The city-state offers various hiring passes and schemes tailored to meet different hiring needs, providing greater certainty and flexibility to employees. This includes the Overseas Networks & Expertise Pass (ONE Pass), which allows top talent to assume a range of roles in Singapore.

The Singapore government also actively supports talent development through initiatives like SkillsFuture and TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA), which provide continuous training and upskilling opportunities. These programs ensure that the resident workforce remains responsive to evolving business needs and technological advancements.

Best-in-class infrastructure

Singapore’s world-class infrastructure provides the highest standard of living to its residents, thus making it an attractive destination for relocating companies and employees. The government invests significant resources in rejuvenating the city-state’s transportation and sustainability, such as the Singapore Green Plan 2030 where the aim is to continuously restore nature into our urban environment.

On the technology and innovation front, Singapore is already one of the most AI-ready countries with a leading technology and innovation hub in Southeast Asia. With ambitious plans underway for future technologies like 6G mobile networks and 10Gbps home broadband network, this further solidifies Singapore’s position as a digital leader in the region where AI and cloud computing are taking center stage.

Additionally, Singapore’s vibrant entertainment scene attracts world-class events and performances. The city-state hosts major concerts by international artists like Coldplay and Taylor Swift and is home to iconic venues such as Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. These venues offer a wide array of entertainment options, from musicals and concerts to theme parks and casinos, making Singapore a hub for both business and leisure.

In summary, Singapore’s strategic location, robust economic outlook, world-class infrastructure, and proactive talent development initiatives make it an ideal destination for businesses and their employees. The city’s ability to attract and nurture a diverse talent pool ensures its continued success as a vibrant and competitive global hub.
