navigating relocation in the kingdom of saudi arabia: part two

In this second part of our series on talent mobility to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we delve into the critical logistics of moving household goods and explore the educational landscape for expatriate families. If you missed it, check out the first blog in our two-part series on relocating to Saudi Arabia.

shipping household goods to saudi arabia

When it comes to shipping household goods, a smooth relocation hinges on several key considerations:

  • Opt for air freight: Given growing regional tensions, air shipment is currently the most reliable method. Sea shipments can face delays or rerouting, so it is crucial to build extra time into your relocation timeline if you choose this option for your assignee population.
  • Timing and permits: Goods cannot be shipped into Saudi Arabia until a local residency permit (Iqama) is issued, which your employee will obtain on arrival.
  • Be present at customs clearance: All shipments are subject to customs inspections, duties, and taxes, and the owner must be present during this time.
  • Budget for increased freight rates: Due to the Red Sea attacks, freight rates have risen drastically. Dammam is particularly affected, with longer transit times and delayed sailing frequencies.

schooling in saudi arabia for expatriate children

Although the official school starting age in Saudi Arabia is three, many expatriates look for educational settings for their children before this age. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Early education: Nurseries within compounds or nearby branches are common choices for parents of younger children. However, assignees should be prepared for waiting lists that include both local and international children. It’s therefore recommended that assignees make an application for registration as early as possible to obtain a suitable school place.
  • International schools: These are typically the most popular choice for expatriates, offering a diverse environment with multiple languages spoken. Families often seek an international experience for their children.
  • Admission requirements vary between schools, and parents are advised to contact the school of their choice directly for clarity on what is required. Expat families in Saudi Arabia should consider cost, curriculum and convenience when weighing the pros and cons of schools in their city of choice.
