We are honoured to be a part of an industry that has a hand in helping families stay connected, empowering employees to take career leaps and helping organisations provide high-quality support services to their employees. However, we also recognise our industry’s impact on the planet; it’s estimated that 353 million gallons of fuel from moving activities contribute to annual waste in the United States (moveBuddha).
We strongly believe that measurement drives accountability and performance, and environmental action is no exception. With that in mind, we are excited to have taken a large step in our sustainability journey by committing to develop and work towards Science Based Targets for emissions reductions via a pledge to SBTi, as of October 2023. The initiative’s measured approach will help us create a fundamental change for our company and, hopefully, our industry as a whole.
SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) is a leading framework for setting and measuring performance against meaningful emissions reductions in near-term and long-term Net Zero goals. The respected reputation and strong framework uptake by client organisations and other leading global businesses have inspired us to join over 6,000 other global organisations committed to supporting climate stability.
At Cartus, we did not just want to comply with sustainable legislation but excel and continue to add value in a marketplace where ESG performance becomes an even more meaningful metric for business. To achieve this, we knew that our response needed to be considerate, include all areas of our business operations, involve our supplier partners globally and symbolise a long-term focus on fundamental change.
Our teams have invested heavily in improving our understanding of our own impact and opportunities, starting work with our supplier partners and clients to comprehend their appetites and needs regarding sustainable actions. The message we heard loud and clear was, “Good intentions alone do not meet the challenges we face, nor can carbon offsetting alone, without a measured approach to addressing our initial impact first.”
With that in mind, in addition to our commitment to SBTi, we are investing in making sustainability a facet of our company culture and business. As of March 2024, I, Andy Conduit-Turner, previously Director, Growth & Enablement, have taken on a new title as Director, Sustainable Growth Enablement. This new role allows me to dedicate 50% of my time to sustainability, analysing how we at Cartus travel, work and turn our goals into action. This new position marks sustainability not just as a trend or short-term objective, but as a permanent feature of who we are at Cartus.
Our public commitment to SBTi is not the end of our sustainability journey but the beginning of a new and exciting one! As we progress with the development of goals, we anticipate engagement across our business functions internally and are actively measuring and trying to find new sustainability opportunities for our offices and suppliers.
Sustainable change will doubtlessly present us with challenges to overcome and puzzles to solve, but with more measurable impacts, we will also have tremendous opportunities to innovate, improve and better capture the mobility industry’s contribution to sustainable business growth. Helping people move better!
