What could be more magical than heading to the official hometown of Santa Claus during the festive season? The Rovaniemi market offers an enchanting winter wonderland. Visit Santa’s post office, where the elves work tirelessly to sort letters from children around the world and enjoy reindeer sleigh rides through the snow-covered forest as the gentle jingle bells create a magical atmosphere.
The Lappish Christmas cuisine is heavenly; Lohikeitto is a creamy, rich, and warming salmon soup not to be missed, Karjalanpiirakat – pastry pies filled with mashed potato and served with a generous dollop of butter, and Joulutorttu – a Christmas pastry in the shape of a star or pinwheel with prune jam and dusted with icing sugar. And, of course, be on the lookout for the world-famous Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis.
If you’re looking for something a little different, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar transforms into a festive hub during the Christmas season, offering a vibrant and bustling shopping experience. Exotic spices and local treasures make unique gifts, including baklava and traditional Turkish delights. While you’re there, explore the city’s rich history by visiting landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, beautifully illuminated at night. Alternatively, take a cruise on the Bosphorus to admire the city’s unique skyline.
Prague’s Old Town Square transforms into a winter wonderland during the Christmas season. The Gothic and Baroque architecture surrounding the square adds to the magical atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy shopping for handcrafted gifts, ornaments, and lots of local goodies. Be sure to try trdelnik, a sweet pastry that’s a local favorite, as well as goulash and hearty Czech sausages. While you’re there, don’t miss the stunning Prague Castle – beautifully illuminated with lights and the iconic astronomical clock as it strikes the hour.
Krakow’s Christmas market is held in the breathtaking Main Market Saware, a historical gem of medieval architecture. The backdrop of Gothic and Renaissance style buildings adorned with twinkling lights creates an enchanting atmosphere that seems plucked from the pages of a storybook. As you stroll through the market, your senses will be tantalized by the aroma of sizzling sausages, pierogi (dumplings) and oscypek – a smoked cheese native to the Tatra mountains. The star of the show is “grzaniec galicyjski,” a steaming mug of mulled wine infused with spices. The centerpiece of the market is the life-sized nativity scene, known as “Szopka”. Crafted by local artisan, these intricate scenes feature miniature replicas of Krakow’s landmarks.
Grafton Street, one of Dublin’s most famous shopping districts, is bedecked with sparkling lights, creating a captivating, festive ambiance. Warm your spirit with a steaming cup of Irish coffee or a glass of creamy hot chocolate. Savory offerings include hearty stews and pies while sweat treats like mince pieces and fruitcake are a must during the festive season. Local choirs and musicians serenade shoppers with melodious tunes, spreading cheer and goodwill.
