AI vs. AI: artificial intelligence vs. actual individuals

The topic of AI can ignite feelings of fear or excitement, but what separates those two emotions? Knowledge. Enthusiasm for the opportunities that emerge from AI implementation stems from understanding where AI began, and where it can take us.

AI first appeared as technology that would stay locked behind the walls of large companies in Silicon Valley, but with the release of ChatGPT in 2022 and other AI programs, generative technologies have quickly become available to the public at the touch of a button. These tools are being widely adopted across many industries to increase productivity and efficiency, including global mobility. Society’s rapid engagement with AI and large language models (LLMs) has caused relocation companies to consider the best way to use AI as a tool to support service offerings.

The global mobility industry is incredibly nuanced; we are a people business, but to service our clients as efficiently as possible, we must (and do!) stay abreast of modern technology. Especially if that technology, such as AI, is capable of more effectively dispensing our relocation services to our clients and customers.

As with any new development, there are ways that the impact of AI can both help and potentially hinder a mobility business. Let’s examine a few.

opportunities: speed and efficiency

  • AI can quickly complete clerical tasks in the relocation process, such as estimating the cost of relocation, thus freeing up more time for consultants to focus on more significant client-related activities.
  • AI can act as a research tool to provide consultants with the specific information they need to further support transferees—for instance, detailed information about an assignee’s host location, immigration requirements, or temporary housing options, at an impressive speed.
  • AI can be incorporated into current relocation technology to streamline processes that affect our clients—for example, reimbursements or choosing customized benefits.

risks: lack of human contact

  • The cross-cultural and social challenges that arise when moving an assignee require a personal touch that AI and LLMs just cannot provide.
  • Our industry deals with extremely sensitive and confidential client information, and the use of AI within specific steps of the relocation process could pose a data privacy risk.
  • AI is quick, but not always right. So, all AI-generated information must be monitored to ensure it is correct, applicable, and free from bias before it is used and or sent.
  • While AI can quickly surface existing content and ideas, it is unable to generate new ideas or innovations.

cartus and ai

At Cartus, we are excited about the opportunities that emerge from the use of AI and LLMs, especially as a leader in technology solutions. Conversely, as a leader in high-touch, high-quality service, we never underestimate the importance of providing real-life customer interactions.

“My Cartus relocation consultant] was fantastic, loved working with her. She was always available for a call to support, especially when there were some hiccups in the visa process that delayed the actual move. She also asked about our dog every call we had, which made me feel understood, seen, and fully supported.” – Cartus assignee

This approach has allowed us to continue to be efficient and innovative while maintaining our commitment to hands-on client and customer support and preserving confidentiality. Utilizing AI to streamline simple tasks in the relocation process allows our consultants to use more of their time to provide personalized, empathetic assistance to relocating families.

“One aspect that truly stood out was the exceptional service provided by the relocation consultant. Relocating can be a nightmare but having someone like [my consultant] by your side to guide you through the labyrinth of paperwork, logistics, and endless details made a world of difference. She never hesitated to go the extra mile to ensure that all my queries were addressed, and I felt supported throughout the process.” – Cartus assignee

These testimonials highlight that our consultants are among our best assets, and the experiences they create may never be duplicated by AI or any other piece of technology. We will continue to leverage innovative technology to make their jobs easier, freeing consultants to focus on making relocating families feel understood, seen, and fully supported.

moving forward with ai

Generative technology is here to stay, and it will be transformational for our industry. We aim to lead the charge to strategically find technologies that will streamline our processes and push our employee experience even higher. Thus, we are aggressively exploring where we can implement AI into our business to automate and enhance our company in as many areas as possible.
