2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games – Part Trois

Olympic Games: 26 July to 11 August 2024

Paralympic Games: 17 August to 9 September 2024

In the third part of our “Paris ‘24” series, we run through the four key challenge areas that may impact your global mobility programs this summer:

  1. Immigration services. With the creation of around 250,000 jobs, including thousands of volunteers, there continues to be an increase in the number of visa, work and residence permit applications. With longer visa processing times, it is important to be as timely as possible with upcoming renewals and allow generous lead times when scheduling new assignments. Work closely with your immigration services partner to remain up to date on any further delays.
  2. Travel. Allow longer travel times in Paris and around other Olympic venues. Road closures and dedicated Olympic lanes for accredited vehicles mean impacted areas are likely to be more congested than usual. Public transport will also be affected and increased security measures will mean further delays.
  3. Accommodation. When searching for accommodation, be mindful that rental rates are far higher than normal, and availability continues to be limited. There is very little flexibility and downpayment requirements are stricter. The most popular Parisian areas to reside during the Olympic period are the 11th, 15th and 18th district due to their close proximity to popular Paris monuments and vibrant nightlife. Ensure relocating employees are mindful of these challenges when searching for properties.
  4. Household goods. The packing and delivery of household goods are likely to be significantly impacted in the coming months. Heightened security at all French ports are expected and container haulage capacity from the main ports of entry will be stretched, before, during and after the Games and this may generate increases in storage or warehouse handling costs, as well as possible delays in delivery.

At Cartus we are working closely with our on-the-ground supplier partners to keep up to date with the very latest trends and challenges. In the meantime, we recommend you continue to plan in advance any moves you may have into and out of France and set expectations with impacted relocating employees and their families.

We are here to provide you with guidance and to address any concerns you may have regarding the Paris Olympic Games, so please do not hesitate to contact your Cartus representative if you have any questions or queries or email cartussolutions@cartus.com.

Challenges aside, relocating families should make the most of their relocation experience during this exciting event, taking part in local celebrations and festivities where possible. To find out more visit paris2023.org.
