from college to cartus in 15 weeks… powered by upward mobility—part two

My name is Charlyse Young, and I am the 2023 Branding and Communications Intern. I started my role in May and could not have imagined how impactful this experience would turn out to be.

my experience

From my first day at Cartus, I was assigned stimulating work that helped me develop as a marketer. Within my first month of working on the Branding and Communications team, I had the privilege of helping to edit and proof this blog, “The Impact of a Group Move on Employee Retention,” and publishing one of my own, “Juneteenth and the Power of Two,” on Cartus.com. This internship experience has allowed me to contribute to various large-scale projects such as RFP data migration and a summer-wide social campaign, both of which have helped me to fully understand what an entry-level marketing position would look and feel like.

Additionally, the Upward Mobility sessions that Cartus connected me to were beneficial because my job involves publishing content; how can one create concise and valuable content without first having a firm understanding of what you are writing about? The resources and industry information the sessions provided allowed me to establish a firm foundation of knowledge on which I could build my content. The program conducted training sessions on a variety of topics such as how to build your personal brand, global mobility trends (hosted by Lisa Johnson, Director, Global Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Solutions, and Karen Wilks, Vice President of Strategic Growth), and a networking session (hosted by WERC’s Young Professionals Network). It is education and experiences like these that make it evident that my internship at Cartus is not just training me to be a good intern but to be a great employee.

I have many takeaways from my time at Cartus. This opportunity has created a pathway for me to expand my personal portfolio. I have also gained…

  • Soft skills such as the ability to collaborate with colleagues, project management, and creative problem-solving.
  • Industry knowledge and experience with corporate writing.
  • Experience using industry-wide marketing tools and tech that facilitate the creation of social media campaigns and the publishing of thought leadership.

the cartus culture is my culture

Cartus not only creates a great employee experience for their clients but also creates a positive experience for their own employees. My teammates are comprised of enthusiastic people who have deep knowledge and expertise in both the mobility and marketing industries. I initially wondered how I could be a resource to such a strong team, but my team helped to allay my trepidation. They viewed my fresh perspective and comfort with social media as an asset, and this has allowed us to foster great working dynamics. I have always felt at ease, seen, and heard, at Cartus, because of the culture. Many employees in various levels and positions in the business have made themselves available to me as mentors and support systems throughout this process; and with that, I can say I have not only enjoyed this experience, but I also feel a sense of belonging at Cartus.

this is just the beginning

Although my summer internship is ending, I have the opportunity to extend my internship on a part-time basis. This extension allows me to continue contributing to the amazing content produced by the Branding and Communications team while I continue my education and volunteer efforts. I cannot wait to expand my knowledge and experience working on larger pieces of content and diving deeper into mobility’s hottest topics and trends. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my experience this summer; and thank you to Cartus for giving me the platform to share my story. I cannot wait for you to meet my fellow intern, Tattyanna, in a few weeks!
